The Globe

The Globe Theatre is an English renaissance theatre in London, where several of William Shakespeares plays were preformed. Within two stories, 3000 guests could fit into the theatre. The scene was placed under the open sky. The theatre was first opened in 1599, but burned down during a performance of Henry VIII, 29 of June 1613. In 1977 a modern reconstruction of  The Globe, named “Shakespeare’s Globe” opened. It was placed approximately 230 meters from the site of the original theatre.

In February 2016, a temporary full-scale replica of the second Globe theatre, called “the pop-up Globe” and based on scholarly reanalyses of the surviving evidence for the 1614 building, opened downtown.

Save the life under water

discuss the problems life under water are currently facing
– reflect on the impact this documentary had on you
– do you think it will help the oceans that we put more focus on this problem? Why/why not?
– Finally, what are you most likely to do in order to preserve our oceans, and what do you think others should do?

Life under water is facing an enormous problem, and it is happening right now. The oceans are full of plastic, garbage, and oil. This has an impact on the life under water, but also on us. When we use products that contain microplastic, like shampoo or toothpaste, it ends up in the ocean when we rinse it out. Then in the end, we end up consuming it through the food we eat. Sea animals are suffering because of our waste, their stomachs are filled with plastic and their bodies are trapped in an old plastic can holder.

I have always worried and cared about the environment, but this documentary made me realize that this is not a future problem, it is happening right now. We have to deal with this now before it is too late. It was shocking to see all the plastic that had been washed up from the ocean. And there was plastic from all over the world.

I feel almost inspired to act more responsible toward the environment. The plastic whale made me realize that we all have to help, everything counts.

I definitely think that if we put more focus towards this problem it will help. People are not aware of how serious this problem really is. Education is key to this problem. Educate children, families, and co-workers, help them understand the seriousness.

Liberal vs Conservative: Guns

I chose to look at the topic ‘Guns’. The articles and posts on the liberal side are against guns. The first post on this side is about a former U.S. Army Infantry officer who was turning in his guns to the Miami Police Department, as part of their gun buy-back program. The reason for this is that he, even though he considered himself as a responsible gun owner, felt like no civilian do need a gun. And especially after everything that have happened the last few months. On the other side, we have the conservative posts, they are more pro guns. This side is strongly for the second amendment, and do not want to turn in their guns. None of the articles that I read war directly offensive. On the conservative side, a lot of people meant that the liberals lied when they said that they were not going to take their guns away. They also state that “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people”, which in some ways are true, but I personally think that the access to lethal weapons can be, and are, a factor to the massive massacre. If no one had guns, maybe these events would happen differently?

I do think there are some limits to the freedom of speech. Here in Norway, we have some rules within the freedom of speech. You can say what you want but, defamation and discriminating or racist statements are indeed against the law and you can be punished for it. So in the theory, you can say what you like and post your meanings on facebook or any other media. But you can receive strong reactions from other people and then you have to deal with the consequences.

When I look at the conservative side, where they support the law about guns, I see a lot of opinions I do not support or agree with. When that is said, I can understand why a lot of people want to keep their guns. Several Americans have guns to protect themselves in case of robbery, terror etc. and I think they are afraid what could happen if they could not protect themselves.

Spotlight

(5) Name and describe the protagonist and the antagonist in this story;

In the film Spotlight, I do not believe that there is only one person as the protagonist. I feel like the whole Spotlight-team is the main ‘character’, because it was them as a group the film focused around. I also think that is was the church who was the antagonist, again not only one person, but the whole group.

(6) In the story told by the film, what is the main conflict and how is it resolved?;

The main conflict in the film is that the church has covered numerous of incidents involving, priests molesting little boys. The conflict is solved by the spotlight team, they spent over a year investigating and interviewing victims. They worked day and night to find all the information they needed to expose the church and end this once and for all. In the end, they posted an article explaining and telling the truth, this followed up with hundreds of articles about the same conflict.

The School Shooting in Floria -in the media

I read an article at CNN.com, which was titled “They survived a school shooting. Now activism feels more urgent than classes”. The article focuses on the children who experienced the massacre, and their fight to stop the second amendment. The students at  Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, are more interested to focus on activism, than to prepare for graduation.

CHAPTER 10

In chapter 10 the conflicts between Changez and America, his workplace and himself enhances.

  • a conflict between Changez and the American

A conflict between Changez and the American could be the skepticism the American expresses when Changez told the story about Juan-Bautista.  Changez ensured the American that his story was real, like all the others. But you could never know if a person who you have just met speak the truth or not.

  • a conflict between Changez and the United States

After the 9/11 attacks, Changez’s view on the US is different. And the US citizens started to look at Changez as more of a foreigner than before. Changez had loved his city and used to feel like an American, but now he felt like an outsider. And the only thing he could see was what the US did to Muslims and Muslim countries in the middle-east. This made a division between Changez and the US, and it was the start of their conflict.

  • a conflict between Changez and his workplace (Underwood Samson)

After 9/11 Changez felt an urge to show the identity of his home country, therefore, he wore a beard. This was seen as a threat for his co-workers, and they encouraged him to shave. Jim was the only one not to care, he only focused on the work Changez delivered, not his looks. Jim suggested that Changez kept himself busy, with all that was going on, and offered him a case in Chile. During the trip, Changez did close to nothing of work, and created a conflict between him and the vice-president, and then with Jim when he wanted to withdraw from the case.

  • an inner conflict between Changez and himself

I think his conflict within himself is the biggest conflict. Changez do not know were he belong, is it America or Lahore, or neither. He is torn between two completely different countries, cultures and, mindsets. Also the fact that Erica is distancing herself from Changez -because she is still in love with her dead boyfriend and will not hurt him- he does not have any reason to love America anymore. His whole view on America changes, he quit his job, but still long after Erica.

  • quotes from the chapter;

“Have you hear of the Janissaries? “No,” I said. “They were Christian boys,” he explained, “captured by the Ottomans and trained to be soldiers in a Muslim army, at that time the greatest army in the world. they were ferocious and utterly loyal: they had fought to erase their own civilizations, so they had nothing else to turn to.”

While Changez and Jaun-Bautista were eating at a restaurant, Jaun-Bautista told him this story. I think he did it to provoke an idea in Changez, that he was ‘fighting’ for America against his home, Pakistan, and was going to erase his own civilization.

“There really could be no doubt: I was a modern-day janissary, a servant of the American empire at a time when it was invading a country with a kinship to mine and was perhaps even colluding to ensure that my own country faced the threat of war.”

This was after the dinner when Changez was alone in his room. He sat and reflected on this idea for a long time. He concluded with the fact that he was a modern-day janissary, and that he was going to force his own country to face the threat of war.
